Current Scenario in Rafale deal issue:

Supreme Court has admitted a petition, which names Narendra Modi as a private individual as one of the four respondents in the Rs 60,000 crore Rafale deal. The petition, filed by lawyer Manohar Lal Sharma on October 10, was on Wednesday clubbed with other three other petitions, all demanding a CBI probe into the controversial 36-fighter jet deal. In his petition, listed as 225-2018, Sharma has argued that allegations of corruption in the deal with France warranted a CBI probe against Modi in a personal capacity, and not as a Prime Minister. Former Union defence minister Manohar Parrikar, businessman Anil Ambani and France’s Dassault Aviation have been named as other three respondents in the petition.

The court is hearing four petitions, including those by former ministers Yashwant Sinha and Arun Shourie, asking for a court-monitored CBI investigation into the Rs. 59,000 crore contract for 36 fighter jets from Dassault, a top French aeronautics company.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, which also comprised Justices U U Lalit and K M Joseph, also said that details, including the steps in the decision making process for the procurement of jets, which could “legitimately” be brought into public domain, be made available to the parties who have filed petitions before it in the matter.

On Wednesday, 31 October, the Supreme Court of India passed an order that could prove extremely significant to the Rafale controversy. Weeks after asking the government to submit details of the procedure by which the final deal was arrived at, a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi now asked the government to also submit pricing and strategic details in a sealed cover within ten days.

The court, however, took a critical view of the request for a CBI probe into the deal, stating that the investigation agency needed to put its house in order first. The next hearing has been scheduled for November 14.

There has not been any order passed by Supreme Court to file a case against PM Modi till date in Rafale deal issue, as highlighted in the fake message.

Fact Check: WhatsApp Message On Motive Of PSO Shooting The Wife & Son Of A Judge In Gurugram

0

Recently, a WhatsApp message in Hindi, has been shared on various WhatsApp groups in reference to the gruesome shooting in busy market in Gurugram, Haryana on 13th October 2018, wherein a police constable (PSO) shot the wife and son of an Additional Session Judge. This message is spreading a misleading & false narrative.

NARRATIVE ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Translation of the WhatsApp text:

“From yesterday on every news channel, it is being seen and heard that a crazy constable of police shot a judge’s wife and son.

But no one would tell the reason for this incident. So, let me tell you why that fellow took such a step.  Phone calls were coming from the house of the gunman repeatedly, that your son is ill and his condition remains fragile.

Hearing this, the gunman had requested from the Judge that he be allowed to go home as his son’s life was in danger. But the Judge told him that he should, “first take my wife and son for shopping or else I would suspend you.”

At that particular moment, the constable controlled his anger and insult, but while on the way to the market, he got a call from his home that his only child had passed away. Hearing this tragic news, the constable lost his wits and did this shooting.”

OUR FACT CHECK

Fact Crescendo team did a fact check on this issue. We found the following:

The WhatsApp message is spreading false & misleading statements about an actual event.

We did a reverse image search and found that the image of Mahipal Singh shared with the message, could have been taken from Mahipal Singh’s facebook account :

https://www.facebook.com/mahipal.ji.169

Our readers can also view the archived Facebook page here.

Also, as per the WhatsApp message, Mahipal’s only child was unwell and subsequently died. Hearing the tragic news of his son’s death, Mahipal Singh loses his wits and shots the wife & son of Additional Sessions Judge Krishan Kant in the market where they had gone shopping. This was done to take revenge on Judge Krishan Kant for not allowing him leave to go and take care of his allegedly sick son who subsequently died.

So, whats true? And what’s false?

TRUE:

  • Mahipal Singh was a Haryana police head constable and was serving as personal security guard (PSO) of the Additional Sessions Judge Krishan Kant for nearly past two years.
  • On Saturday, 13th October 2018, Additional Sessions Judge Krishan Kant’s wife Ritu and their son Dhruv who was 18 years old only, had gone for shopping in the Arcadia market Saturday when they were shot by personal security officer (PSO) Mahipal Singh, in Arcadia Market, Sector 49, Gurugram around 3:30pm. Mahipal escaped in the judge’s car, as people looked on. And both Ritu & Dhruv were admitted to a hospital in critical condition.
  • Additional Sessions Judge Krishan Kant in a statement said that after committing the crime, Mahipal informed him about the incident on the phone.
  • On 14th October, Regional Medical Officer, Gurgaon Civil Hospital, Pawan Choudhary confirmed the death of wife Ritu and said the post-mortem examination had been conducted. The son, Dhruv, who was shot in the head, is brain dead. He has been put on life support system. It would be a miracle if he is saved, the medical officer had said.
  • The police on 13th Oct’18 itself, had arrested the gunman from Gurugram-Faridabad road about two hours after the shooting incident, but said that they are yet to ascertain the motive behind the crime.
  • The accused was terminated from the police department on 14th October 2018.
  • The police have denied earlier probable reasons given, like “fight with wife” and “not getting leaves”, as motives for shooting the judge’s wife and son. The investigation is still on. Haryana Police chief B S Sandhu said the motive behind the shooting was still not clear. “We are trying to ascertain the reason behind this ghastly act. Our top priority is to solve the case,” he said.
  • As per Hindustan Times article, police commented that Mahipal Singh had been allegedly watching videos related to religion and it is suspected that he had been attending ‘conversion’ camps. However, HT (Hindustan Times) could not independently verify that claim. The police also could not explain as to how his alleged attendance at such camps could be connected to Saturday’s shooting.

Our readers can read various HT articles on this incident below:

On 14th October 2018, Mahipal Singh was brought to a Gurgaon court at 1 pm which sent him to four-day police custody. The Gurgaon Police had sought a week’s custody for extensive interrogation of Mahipal to establish the reason why he shot Ritu and Dhruv Kant. It has set up a Special Investigation Team to investigate the case from all angles.

Below is a video captured by public, showing the aftermath of shooting, when Mahipal Singh was trying to push Druv’s body into the car unsuccessfully.

***THE VIDEO CONTAINS CONTENT SOME MAY FIND DISTURBING***

As per various news media report’s, what we could ascertain was that:

  • Mahipal Singh has two daughters. One of his daughters was allegedly unwell on that fateful day but not in critical condition as portrayed in the WhatsApp message.
  • As per an NDTV article online, Mahipal’s uncle, Daan Singh, claimed that Mahipal was not given leave though he told the judge that his daughter needed urgent medical attention. “On the day of the incident, Mahipal had received repeated calls from his wife asking him to reach home early to take his daughter to a doctor,” Daan Singh told reporters at his hometown Rewari. Mahipal’s uncle also claimed he resented the judge’s family for “mistreating” him and ordering him to do odd jobs and run errands, though he was on official duty. Daan Singh said when Mahipal begged for leave, “the judge rebuked him and asked him to take his wife and son for shopping instead.”
  • “The judge’s wife also allegedly scolded Mahipal when they were going to the market. When Dhruv (the son), emerging from the mall, asked for the car keys from Mahipal, he shouted at him, took out his service revolver and fired at him. When the judge’s wife came to Dhruv’s rescue, he fired at her as well,” says the First Information Report (FIR).

Our readers can refer to NDTV article on this incident here.

So, Fact Crescendo team found out that the motives behind gruesome event which happened on 13th October are still unclear & inconclusive. Police is still investigating and as per various new media on 18th October, Mahipal Singh would be presented in front of the court.

FALSE :

X  Mahipal Singh had only one child and that was a son.

X   Mahipal Singh’s son was unwell and died.

X  Hearing the tragic news of his son’s death Mahipal Singh lost his wits and shot the wife & son of Additional Sessions Judge Krishan Kant.

Fact Check: Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) Contamination

0

Recently, few WhatsApp and Social Media messages created a panic in parents pan India. These messages were playing on the fears of parents by propagating misleading narrative.

NARRATIVE ON SOCIAL MEDIA:

Other messages like:

“Don’t give polio drops to children under 5 years”

or

Readers can also view the same tweet here: http://archive.is/hLLUb

Similar messages lead to people getting confused and fearful. The twitter users started distributing messages from various news media sources to respond on or counter these messages. Few of the messages are below:

OUR FACT CHECK:

Fact Crescendo team did a fact check on this issue. We found the following:

The WhatsApp messages are playing on the fears of parents and spreading misleading statements about an actual event.

So, whats true? And what’s false?

TRUE :

  • The Health Ministry has ordered a probe after traces of polio type 2 virus were found in some batches of oral polio vaccine (OPV) manufactured by a Ghaziabad-based pharmaceutical company, even as the firm’s managing director was arrested recently on Saturday.
  • The authorities have also ordered scrutiny of oral polio vaccine samples from all domestic suppliers amid investigations into how one company released an OPV containing type-2 polio virus withdrawn globally in 2016 as it considered more risk than benefits. Polio type 2 virus strain has been eradicated worldwide, including in India.
  • The Ministry of Health in its statement stated that after some sections of media reported about bivalent Oral Polio Vaccine supplied by a particular company being found ‘not of standard quality’, rumours are being spread that there is some sort of virus in the polio drops.
  • The managing director of Biomed Pvt Ltd., which was supplying polio vaccines for only government-run immunisation programmes and not for private retail, was arrested after the Central Drug Regulator filed an FIR in this case.
  • The Drugs Controller General of India has also asked the company to stop “manufacture, sale or distribution till further orders.” At least 50,000 vials are under the scanner.
  • The vials that these polio vaccines come in are built with a safety mechanism. The top of the vaccine vial is usually of a different colour and if it has gone bad, the colour of the vial changes.
  • Currently, OPV manufactured by companies other than Biomed and bought from normal retail outlets are perfectly safe for administration.
  • Ministry of Health  also gave statement that: “Type 2 polio vaccine virus traces which have been found in bOPV vials is the attenuated (weakened) poliovirus and does not cause paralysis and was also earlier used in tOPV till April 2016. The recipients of such vaccine will usually shed the vaccine virus through faecal route for about 4-6 weeks after which it will die down.”

So, as per Government of India, OPV are safe to administer.

FALSE:

X  All polio drops vaccinations (OPV) are adulterated.

X  All parents should stop giving their children OPV, especially those children who are below five years old

Fact Check: Whatsapp Fake Message On Income Tax Refund

0

Fact Crescendo team had published an article in September 2018 about fake messages regarding Income Tax Refunds being shared on WhatsApp. This article is an updation of the same and you can view that previous article below:

FactCheck: Income Tax Refund SMS?

Recently, once again various users of WhatsApp have received messages like these:

WHATSAPP MESSAGE:
“Dear Sir / Madam,
Your income tax refund of Rs.15,480 has been approved and your bank a/c will be credited shortly. Do kindly verify your a/c no 5XXXXX6755. If the same is incorrect, quickly follow the link below to update your bank record on file. https://bit.OwpYK6”

Whenever the filing dates of income tax returns approaches, people start receiving fake text messages in the name of the Income Tax Department, asking people to fill in details to avail the refund applicable to them.

OUR FACT CHECK

Fact Crescendo did a fact check again as our continuous effort to educate our readers to beware of these messages. We found that WhatsApp messages as above have been received by lot of people at some time or other in last few years. Various banks and their employees are also sharing advisory about these messages to their customers to warn them about these kinds of fake messages.

We tried accessing the links given in the WhatsApp messages but we got error messages like one below:

Latestly.com also did an article titled “Spam SMS Alert: Fake Income Tax Refund (ITR) Message Leads to Malicious Link Seeking Bank Account Details.” In this article they educated readers to identify these kind of fake messages and even gave a screenshot (given below) of the malicious site which user would access via the link on which the user is asked to verify or correct his bank account details. This malicious site would then intend to steal user personal data. You can read this article here.

Abhishek Goyal, a Karnataka Cadre IPS Officer on July 2018, even posted the same message on Twitter to warn people about these kinds of fake messages.

Also, News18 on August 30, 2018 published an article on an alert sent by State Bank Of India (SBI) to its customers, warning them of similar fake messages. You can read about it here.

“Taxpayers are receiving emails from addresses remarkably similar to the original government one, asking them to provide their net banking details to ‘receive their refund amount.” Times of India did an article on this issue in July 2018. You can read the article here.

In previous years also, fake messages which were either related to Income Tax Refunds, Bank Account details updation or even extension of last the last date of filing audit reports & Income Tax returns, keep cropping up on various WhatsApp groups.

An example is: “A fake message disseminated through Whatsapp about the extension of the last date for companies to file their audit reports and income tax returns for the assessment year 2015-16 has disturbed the schedule of chartered accountants who have been working with the month end as the D-Day in 2015.” The Hindu did an article on this issue and highlighted misuse of WhatsApp to spread false and fraudulent news. You can read that article here.

Even BoomLive.in, another fact checking site, did an intensive coverage of this issue. You can read about it here.

IN CONCLUSION

Fact Crescendo advises readers to be aware of these fake & fraudulent messages and to stop distributing them on WhatsApp and other social media apps. Readers can before sharing these kinds of messages, visit multiple fact checking sites and research whether a message is fake or fraudulent. We as citizens have a responsibility to nip these kinds of hoax & fake content at the first instance and not let it propagate further.

Additionally, even Indian Computer Emergency Response Team, under the aegis of Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India (GOI), has even issued an advisory CERT-In Advisory CIAD-2018-0012, on 22nd March 2018 for Safeguarding Personally Identifiable Information on Social Networking Sites. We would request all readers to at least go through it once. You can access it by clicking here.

FactCheck: Mahatma Gandhi Images Being Circulated

0

Two Images, in particular, one showing Mahatma Gandhi dancing and the second claiming to be the real photograph of Godse shooting Gandhi surfaces mainly during both Birth and Death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi for the past few years.

Image one is being shared on various different social platforms claiming it to be Mahatma dancing with a foreign lady, the narrative shared is that its a very rare photo of Mahatma dancing with Queen Elizabeth

However, if the Image is looked carefully, one can easily spot the muscular built of the impersonator also Mahatma Gandhi always wore a specific leather footwear that was made by himself, which on observation can be easily spotted.

Now the second image is claimed to be taken moments before Mahatma was shot 30th January 1948, and circulated as the rare real photograph of Nathuram Godse.

The Assassination Of Mahatma Gandhi – Two sides of leadership.

Posted by Ritik Vishwakarma on Sunday, 2 February 2014

The picture that is seen above is a shot from a 1963 British movie based on a novel by Stanley Wolpert named as “Nine Hours to Rama”, here the character of Godse is played by a german actor “Horst Buchholz” and Mahatma Gandhi Character is played by Js Casshyap.

On careful observation, one can easily spot the difference between reel actors and real-life persons.

FactCrescendo verifies both the Images and narratives shared on various social platforms as fake and advice its readers not to believe in such propaganda’s.

Did 56 women Died After Using Sanitary Pads?

0

A story doing the rounds on social media claims: 56 women died at a Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai because of sanitary pads such as Whisper, Stayfree, etc. The chemical used in ultra napkins, which converts liquid into gel, causes cancer in bladder and Uterus.

However, the Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai, India, has professed neither knowing nor endorsing anything about the warnings and its claims. And although the extended wear of a single sanitary pad for a prolonged period of time might potentially cause some hygiene and health issues, we found nothing to substantiate the notion that simply wearing one pad per day (rather than changing pads every five hours or less) creates any serious medical concern, much less that it leads to uterine and bladder cancer, has turned anyone’s blood green, or has caused the deaths of 56 Young women.

FactCrescendo verifies this story as Hoax and requests our users to fact check stories before beliveing them as true.

Can Wearing a Black Bra Cause Breast Cancer?

0

After actress Sonali Bendre was diagnosed with cancer, several messages regarding cancer and how to avoid getting the disease, started circulating on WhatsApp. One such forward on breast cancer reads as below:

This message has been widely circualted on all the social platforms, however Tata memorial Hospital has clarified that
“Tata Memorial Hospital doesn’t circulate any health-related messages or advisories on social media.”

We reached out to Dr Ashutosh Tondare , DNB, MBBS Oncology Dept., at Healthy Breasts clinic, to fact-check the contents of this message. He says:

“None of these points have anything to do with breast cancer. They’re all myths.”
The colour of your bra, whether black or white, has nothing to do with breast cancer, Dr Tondare adds.
And when it comes to wearing a bra while sleeping, it is advised to go to sleep without one. But that, again, has no connection to breast cancer.

FactCrescendo Verifies this story as hoax and advises its readers to not belive in such hoax messages.

Truth Behind A Picture of Narendra Modi’s Wife Going Viral On Social Platforms!

0

A Picture of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s wife doing rounds on the social platforms asking people to “not vote for for Mr. Modi in 2019 elections & share the picture if one considers himself as a patriotic”.

Factcrescendo did a google reverse image of the picture and the results revealed that it was an old picture of Prime Minister’s wife Jashodaben Modi’s
application seeking passport which was returned by the regional officer in Gujarat.

Also one can easily spot the photoshoped fingers and a glimpse of the original document on the altered picture.

Factcrescendo verifies that the image being circulated as false and requests its users not to fall for such fake posts.

Paracetamol P-500 having most deadly virus named Machupo

0

In our investigation the viral message of Paracetamol P-500 having most deadly virus named Machupo is a hoax.
A social media hoax that has been viral since early 2017 and has been denounced multiple times continues to be viral on Facebook and WhatsApp.

The text of the hoax states, “URGENT WARNING! Be careful not to take the paracetamol that comes written P-500. It’s new, very white and shiny paracetamol. Doctors prove to contain Machupo virus, considered one of the most dangerous viruses in the world with high mortality rate. Please share this message for all people and families and save their life.”.

While this message has been viral in various forms, a post on a Facebook page called Dr Römal Möhammadi has been shared over 277,000 times at the time of writing.

Even though the aforementioned Facebook post was created in April 2017, it is still being actively shared.

This hoax has been debunked by various Indian newspapers such as Hindu and Bangalore Mirror as well as news channels like ABP News.

Fact-checker website Snopes also published a fact-check regarding this and stated that the P-500 paracetamol tablets contain no virus.

Fact checking website Alt-News has also published a report on this issue.

Tweet Text:
